How to correct encoding problem with Internet Explorer

If you see ?/ followed by a string of Greek characters and a > where a mathematical symbol should be, e.g. a square root sign, this is a sure sign that the Encoding has been set to something other than Western European (typically to Chinese). To fix this do the following:
  1. Right click the mouse in the browser window. This will bring up a popup menu.
  2. About 2/3 the way down the menu you will see Encoding listed. Drag the cursor down and select Encoding. This will bring up a sub-menu.
  3. In the sub-menu select either:
    Western European (Windows)
    Western European (ISO)
